So, is this the corner of the Integral Province Nickeson described where "Balderville" is a commonly used word?

Nice to (re)make your acquaintance, y'all.

Greetings Bruce, we are honored by your visit.  And nice to "see" you again after so many dog years...  sort of shakes me out of my dogmatic slumber to have you pop in again...  wave

I suppose the term "Balderville might have been bandied about a bit here and there...

Great to see you again, Michael -- after more "dog years" than I care to count!

Nickeson has mentioned a couple times that some places in the Integral Province have a mocking name for my Integral Postmetaphysical Spirituality forum, so my ego was pricked enough to find out just where in the Province that was.

Nice to see it's here.  I can take a little ribbing from friends.

Bruce, i'm the guilty party here and agree with mD to be honored by your visit. Balderville is quite a vibrant and healthy place and i enjoy following some of mr. Steven's adventures there. You are a  bright light and my mischief is only intended to jarr the contextual perceptions of "integral" and "metaphysics" of people more intelligent than moi. My function is that the esalen ctr, aurobindo, thompson/lindisfarne, chaudhuri/ciis piece of the story is included. You can lead a wilbersnapper to water, but you can't make 'em drink. Again Bruce, much appreciation bow Handshake...henry

actually Bruce this only the second time in years that "balderville" has come up, and the first time there was little notice. Among the old IN forum diaspora, your IPS and Lisa-ji's archepelago gaia forums seem to be the liveliest....i wonder if you ever have occasion to talk with your JFK colleague Frank Poletti? I don't know him, but he seems like an ideal bridge person with his involvement with JFK, the esalen center for theory and research, and his continuing studies with Rick Tarnas at CIIS. Also recommended are the summaries of the of the 2006 and 2007 "evolutionary metaphysics" conferences @ esalen ctr.org if you're interested...and now, back to my comedy career Cool...henry

Hi, Henry, thanks for your comments and your warm welcome.  I remember we had some nice conversations back on IN.

I don't know Frank Poletti, but I'll look out for him.  The way things work at JFK, usually us adjuncts are in and out just a couple times a week, and we don't run into other instructors very often.

In my own classes, I definitely don't present Wilber's views uncritically.  I also bring in material from Richard Tarnas, Brian Swimme, Jorge Ferrer, and Michael Murphy, among others, so those "circles" are getting some representation at JFKU.

Hey,
Great to see y'all in the same place!

M says that every one of you on this thread has to be there the next time I have a birthday party in North America...she'll organize it. The last one featured gooseberry pie on the Sunshine Coast of B.C. MichaelD might testify that it doesn't get any better than that...at least--I hope...about the pie.

There's a train a'comin'...better git on board...

S

P.S. When I was but a tad, I would pick gooseberries all summer long...dangerous...dangerous... so the next birthday I'd have a pie full of them instead of a cake. Gooseberry pies are goddamned rare.

Sounds delicious, Nickeson.  But you don't need pie to entice me to meet you and M. in person.

Would be pleasure indeed.  BTW, we have gooseberries on the vine right now in the backyard.  Wish I could send you and Marianthi a pie Steven...

Welcome sir.

I really hope we can discuss some of your fabulous essays. I read with interest your post on the Ken Wilber blog (http://www.kenwilber.com/blog/show/307?return=archive&page=5). I appreciate how you took the time to elucidate operational definitions. I find some of the integral jargon a bit cumbersome. Could you explain the concept of "emancipation" as used in the above essay?

assuming that i'm welcome, my challenge is that i haven't flown for 25 years, and would need michael jackson's doctor's help to board an airplane. i'm probably two years away from hosting a difficult to get to gathering here. anyway, i'll dance as fast as i can(gooseberry shuffle) and we'll see. i've always looked forward to meeting all of you bow...enrique

Francis, thanks for the welcome.  I'd be happy to discuss that essay, though it feels like ages ago that I wrote it.  I'm thinking it might qualify as Balder 1.0.  (Just kidding!)  One thing that is dated about it, though, is the word, "emancipation."  That is not a normal word I use; I believe I used it at the time because I'd just had a conference call with Wilber, and he used it to describe two types of soteriological projects -- the relative ones, like psychotherapy or other forms of self- (and social-) development, which aim at better adaptation and functioning, at greater development and maturity, for self and culture; and the "absolute" ones, which promise timeless spiritual release or salvation (moksha, nirvana, etc).  Wilber said both movements are essential:  towards fullness and freedom, respectively.  So, I followed that convention in my essay, putting my own spin on it.

All the best,

B.

Bruce, its a wee odd to be "welcoming" you when you were a core most respected member of the original IN forum and an original heartmind member? anyway i propose changing the name of the thread from "Balderville" to "Bruce Almighty" take a bow
