thanks rev. J. i met Joe Campbell at esalen in 1975, before the fame and celebrity of the Bill Moyers series. After his retirement from Sarah Lawrence, esalen was his favorite spot until his death. i remember an astonishing weekend slideshow/lecture involving Kundalini, the imagery/symbolism of the Tarot, and the Grail legend. He recognized my youthful questing zeal, and pulled no punches about the carnage of the path . What a gem of a Human Being and teacher

Do you think that might have been because it was so near the places where Campbell was one of the two principles in the cuckolding of John Steinbeck?

Cuckolding? . More likely inappropriate houseguest behavior . Joe certainly adored his Gopi/Dakinis until the end of his life. Lore has it that Mike(esalen founder) and Dennis Murphy(author of "the sergeant") were models for Aaron and Cal in Steinbeck's "East of Eden" and their physician grandfather Murphy brought baby Steinbeck into this world

Ha, ha, ha. Maybe Ms. Mary left the Nativity scene in the mall near Los Teques where last month I saw Joseph staring piercingly at baby Jesus with an expression of : 'Who does he look like? Who DOES he look like? It is possible he found out and told her. M.
